Governing Board

The Governing Board (GB) is a structure introduced in the Education Act in the 1998-1999 school year. Parents, teachers, school staff and students meet with Administration on a regular basis to determine the direction of the school and the policies that help the school function.

Members: 2017-18

Parents: Mike Besner (chairperson), Lara Holmes, Marisa Calogero, Claudette Benoit, Wendy Turner, Jodie Lennon, Kristoffer de Forest, Jennifer Drakes

Teachers: Tamara Bush, Lori Macdonald, Sylvie Campeau, Karen Jones, Amanda Maither, Daniel Maag, Sarah Simon

Support Staff: Katerine Danis

Commissioners: Domenico Pavone, Eric Bender

Home & School Representative: Lara Holmes

Community Representative: Susan Bartlet Lewis

The Governing Board consists of:

  • 8 voting parents, elected for a 2 year term
  • Up to 6 voting teachers elected annually
  • Up to 2 voting support staff elected annually or 2 additional teachers
  • 2 non voting community representatives
  • 1 non voting administrator
  • 2 voting students elected annually

An election of 4 parent places is held annually thus allowing continuity from one year to the next. A General Assembly of Parents is held before September 30th of each school year. The purpose of the assembly is to welcome parents to Macdonald High School and to hold an election to fill the parent vacancies on the Governing Board.

Parent and student participation is key to the functioning of the school. Please be involved, stay informed and try to find the time to join.

The role of the Governing Board is:

  • Must adopt the school's budget
  • May solicit funds
  • Must approve policy on student supervision
  • Must approve Rules of Conduct and Safety

The Governing Board Approves:

  • Implementation of the basic school regulations
  • Local programs of study
  • Subject time allocation
  • Programming of educational activities
  • Implementation of student and special educational services

The Governing Board is consulted on:

  • The school's requirement as to goods and services and any renovation or improvement of the school premises
  • The criteria for selection of the school principal
  • The Deed of Establishment of the school
